Lightweight analytics made for quick-loading sites

Many websites are slowed down by the tools used to measure them. Google Analytics is among the heaviest third-party scripts you can add to a site, and it creates hidden costs beyond just file size.

ClearPulse is built differently: a lean script that gathers what matters without adding real weight to your pages.

"We recommend ClearPulse because it's privacy-focused, delivers more reliable data than Google Analytics, and is extremely lightweight, so it doesn't hurt your site performance."

"I rely on ClearPulse for traffic analytics. It respects privacy, doesn't require a cookie banner, and its lightweight script keeps pages fast."

Why should I care about my website speed?

Here are some of the key reasons site speed matters:

  1. People are impatient and the slower your site loads the higher chance a significant part of your first-time visitors will close the browser tab or click on the back button. Page load time directly impacts the bounce rate. Studies consistently show that bounce rates rise sharply as load time increases. Aim for your site to load within 2 seconds.
  2. Search engines such as Google have page speed as one of their ranking factors which determine how sites rank in the search results. A slower page speed may result in your site ranking lower and getting fewer visitors from search than a faster loading site. Learn more about Core Web Vitals.
  3. Most traffic is now on mobile devices with slower connections and limited data plans. A heavier page takes longer to load and costs your visitors real data. Speed matters more on mobile than anywhere else.
  4. Page speed directly affects conversions. Slow pages lose sales, sign-ups and leads. Even a small improvement in load time can have a measurable impact on revenue.
  5. A lighter and faster site means less data is transmitted and less electricity is used. A lighter site emits less carbon for every visitor.

Why is Google Analytics so heavy?

Google Analytics is by far the most widely used analytics platform on the web. Its tracking code is large because it has to be: it is a centralized platform built to support advertising, remarketing, conversion tracking, cross-site audience building and hundreds of individual reports. Most website owners don’t use the vast majority of those features, but they pay the performance cost for all of them on every visit.

GA4 also makes multiple network requests on each page load, not just one. That means more connections to external Google servers, adding latency on top of the raw script weight.

For the majority of website owners it's excessive. What most people genuinely want to know is how many visitors reach their site, what brought them there and what they did. And Google Analytics answers that in a way that isn't friendly to privacy.

Script size comparison

Google Analytics' script weighs in at 135KB gzipped. ClearPulse's tracking script is just 2.5KB, making it 54 times smaller.

And that's only the GA4 script by itself. Most people also pull in Google Tag Manager plus a cookie consent banner, driving the total beyond 285KB.

What makes ClearPulse so lightweight?

The gap in size between ClearPulse and rival analytics tools isn't a coincidence. It stems from the things we deliberately left out.

ClearPulse measures only what most site owners genuinely care about: how many visitors arrived, what brought them there and what they did. We don't follow individuals, assemble user profiles or offer advertising features. Collecting less means far less code is required to do it.

Switching also brings a few savings that are less obvious.

No cookie consent banner required. Since ClearPulse relies on no cookies and gathers no personal data, there's no need for a GDPR cookie consent banner. Those banners are heavy on JavaScript in their own right. Tools such as OneTrust and Cookiebot pile on their own weight and delay to every page load, on top of the analytics script. Moving to ClearPulse can remove that whole layer of overhead.

Improved Core Web Vitals scores. Google relies on Core Web Vitals as ranking signals, among them Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint. Third-party scripts rank among the most frequent reasons for weak Core Web Vitals scores, since they contend for network resources and main thread time even when loaded asynchronously. The ClearPulse script is built to stay out of the way: it loads once your page has finished rendering.

How do I test my website's speed?

GTmetrix is a free tool for gauging how fast your site runs. At a glance it shows you a PageSpeed score, overall load time and total page size.

GTmetrix's Waterfall chart is especially handy. It lays out every resource your site loads along with its size and loading timeline. You can spot your analytics script in that list and see precisely what it contributes to your overall page weight.

What other steps can I take for a fast-loading website?

Below are some of the steps you can take to make your website faster:

  1. Whenever you're thinking of adding a new element to your site, ask whether it's truly needed. You'll discover that many elements are unnecessary and you might decide to skip them.
  2. Review your external scripts. Chat boxes, social media embeds, marketing platforms and tracking tools all increase page weight. Every script you eliminate or swap for a more efficient option speeds up loading for all users across all pages.
  3. Rely on native fonts whenever you can. Native fonts already exist on your users' devices, so they add zero extra weight or delay to your pages.
  4. Cut down on images and videos. Media files weigh far more than text, so trimming multimedia usage can yield major improvements.
  5. Optimize the media you keep by scaling down and compressing them. Your users won't see much change. ImageOptim is an excellent free resource for this.
  6. Adopt newer image formats like WebP or AVIF. These produce much smaller files than PNG or JPEG without noticeable quality loss, and all leading browsers now support them.
  7. Enable lazy loading for images and video so they only load when users scroll down to see them.
